Did Dr. John's Walk on Gilded Splinters Inspire Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child?
Was the main guitar riff in Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child possibly influenced by the
Come Get It, Get It, Come, Come
Walk on gilded splinters
chorus in Dr. John’s I Walk on Gilded Splinters?
The songs are somewhat thematically related, both about Voodoo. Also, Dr. John (Malcolm Rebenack Jr.) recorded Gilded Splinters in 1967 and released it on the Gris-Gris album in January of 1968. I Walk on Gilded Splinters, the album’s closing song, got fairly heavy airplay on “underground” FM radio stations of the day. Jimi Hendrix recorded Voodoo Child (Slight Return) on May 3, 1968, about four months after Dr. John’s song was released.
